Something You Get Through
When you lose the one you love
You think your world has ended
You think your world will be a waste of life
Without them in it
You feel there’s no way to go on
Life is just a sad, sad song
But love is bigger than us all
The end is not the end at all
It’s not somethin’ you get over
But it’s somethin’ you get through
It’s not ours to be taken
It’s just a thing we get to do
Life goes on and on
And when it’s gone
It lives in someone new
It’s not somethin’ you get over
But it’s somethin’ you get through
~Willie Nelson & Buddy Cannon
Have you felt this way? I have.
The universal wisdom of Willie’s beautiful and comforting new song, Something You Get Through (link below), expresses the road each of us travels when we lose someone–a lover, a child, a parent, a pet.
We never get over loss–but we do get through it. Eventually. In our own time.
Here’s the lyric that brought tears to my eyes:
Life goes on and on
And when it’s gone
It lives in someone new
Yes. We never forget out loved one, but we have all that love to give. And when it’s time, we can bring it to live with someone new.
When he sings that “love is bigger than us all” it’s true….so “the end is not the end at all“… and it’s even more poignant when sung by a man in the sunset of his years.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song that sums up life, death, loss and grief as well as Willie’s new one.
You can hear the song and then I hope you’ll buy the new album.

Thank you will for putting these words into song and helping all of us that are dealing with a loss to have hope.. God Bless you!
Wow this is a synchronositc post for two reasons. 1 I have been missing my uncle who died around this time last year, and two my friend just lost her father yesterday so maybe I will send her this post.
This quote is so great and so true! I try to remember this when talking to my children about things they feel is a big deal, it’s something we all get through in our own way!
One of my favorite concerts was Willie. I enjoyed his music then and even more so after.
I think this song would be a good one to listen to by anywone who has experienced loss. Reading through this post made me think of my dad.He passed away years ago, and it still hurts. Hopefully, this song would bring healing.
I totally agree! It never gets easier, we just move on, learns to live with it and get used with the pain.
The lyrics are very touching. We all have been affected by loss in one way or another, that’s for sure.
Yes. This is so true. My mom passed away when I was 16. I’ve never gotten over it and now that I look at it I’ve gotten through it, although barely, I have.
It is so hard to deal with a lost loved one. When my dad died unexpectedly it was incredibly difficult. He was so young too!
You just have to love Willie! I have yet to hear this new song but have no doubt it will hit me straight in the heart.
Willie Nelson wrote that!!
Oh, yes, I have felt this way. Still feeling it, but I am getting through. Thank you for your kind article.
Wow this is really deep. And honestly, such wise words. I have some things in my life that I just can’t seem to get over. Maybe this new outlook will help!
This sounds like a great song and we love Willie Nelson. I am so glad he is still making music. I think of my mother when I hear this an dhow she felt so out of place after my father died.
That is a wonderful lyric and the words are so right on. I have to go check out this album.
I have never heard anyone talk about getting over loss. You can’t…it’s just not possible.
